Character Traits
The book that I am currently reading " Secret Daughter" the protagonist is a women by the name of Kavita. She is an Indian women who has given birth to two girl's, her first child was killed by her husband Jasu but Kavita is determined to prevent her second daughter from getting in the wrath of her murderous husband. "Another girl? What is the matter with you? Let me see! He shouts.", "No. I will not. You are not taking her." She hears the shrillness of her voice, feels the tension flood into her limbs "This is my baby our baby and I will not let you take her. " this quote is a prime example of how determined and strong willed Kavita is. She is fearless too as she stands up to her husband, in her culture there can be serious consequences for her actions. Kavita is also depicted as a very caring and concerned mother, in the quote "Who will take care of my baby? This women? Will she love Usha" exemplifies her concern for her daughter before placing her daughter in the orphanage. Reading this novel the reader feels a great deal of pathos for Kavita, throughout this journey that both Usha and Kavita embark in is inspirational. As the story goes on we can gain a sense of Kavita's state of depression through her thoughts "She hears the sound of Usha's desperate cry echoing behind the closed doors of the orphanage. She allows herself to get lost in the depths of her grief." Her hope for her child to receive a better life is evident "She pictures Usha as a little girl, her hair wound in two braids, each tied with a white ribbon. The image in her mind is perfectly clear: smiling, running, and playing with children, eating her meals and sleeping alongside the others in the orphanage."
