Fear
Fear is everywhere, everyone has a fear and Ralph Waldo Emerson acknowledges this through his quote "Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world." The meaning of this quote is there are various events that take place in our lives that we do not have control of. If there is one thing we do have control over it is our will power to defeat obstacles, but many of us use fear as an excuse. Ralph Emerson shines a light on my theme concept, fear. Most individuals who are afraid are continuously held back by their phobias, fear will corrupt our lives when we allow it to prevent us from truly living.
Courage
L. Frank Baum once said "There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid." I believe that L. Baum is trying to say that we may be different but we all have things that terrify us, in that way we are similar. Although what sets us a part from one another is having the strength to look beyond our fears even when we are scared to. This quote relates to the other side of my theme, courage. Courage can only be defined by two things, the things we do and who we are.
Made in the USA- The main character of this story was fearful after her step mothers death. She was worried about how she was going to fend for her and her brother. She was always on the run scared that she might be caught by the police.
Sarah's Key- A girl named Sarah was taken with her family and imprisoned in an arena soon later to be sent of to labour/ concentration camp. She was fearful of what might happen to her and her family.
The Tunnel- The boy in the story was fearful that he might not be able to cross to the other side of the tunnel which was under water without drowning, but decided that he would continue to be determined and attempt going under the tunnel regardless of the cost. He let go of his fears.
