Tone and Mood - Secret Daughter
The opening of the novel "Secret Daughter" prepares the reader for a callus beginning. The book starts off describing the location where the majority of the story takes place "She came to an abandoned hut dusk, without a word to anyone, when she felt the first unmistakable pulls deep with in her. It is vacant, except for the mat she now lies, knees drawn up to her chest" this quotation allowed me to visualize a third world country. This provided a mysterious mood to which the story begins to take place. "She prays that the baby is born before dawn for her husband rarely awakens before sunrise." when Kavita's thoughts are described it creates a somber and tense feeling between the reader and the characters in this scene. " She was not prepared for what happened last time.... When Jasu glimpsed the Writhing body of the baby the girl in Kavita's arms, a shadow crossed his face. He turned away." this effectively reveals the thoughts of both Jasu and Kavita's feelings towards their new born baby. This quotation expresses the seriousness of giving birth to a girl, which was a not good thing in Kavita's situation. From that point on dread begins to evolve as the mood shifts into a liberating feeling that the reader will be able to relate too.
